Get ready for a surprise when visiting Maryland: the Washington Monument.
“Yes,” Col. Bruce Kintner, USAF (Ret), said, “the original one is near Baltimore.”
This 178-foot-tall monument, dedicated to President George Washington, has been a part of the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood for more than 200 years. Kintner, a MOAA member, finds it one of many sights “that make time in Baltimore even more colorful and memorable.”
For a workout, take the 227 steps to the top. For a more leisurely jaunt, visit the monument’s gallery.
To experience a different take on a Washington monument, visit Washington Monument State Park in Middletown, located atop South Mountain. Here, you’ll see the rugged stone tower initially erected by the citizens of Boonsboro in 1827 and later used as a Union signal station during the Civil War.
